Life can be boring sometimes. Most of the time in fact.
You can begin to feel like the weeks are just passing you by, nothing eventful really happening. You go to school, you go to college, you work your 9-5, you go home, have your food and go to bed to do it all again the next day. You find yourself looking forward to the weekend when maybe you meet a friend for food, or have a rare day out- but sure enough that passes you by quickly and you're back to the norm. It's draining right? We have those big moments to look forward to- a holiday in 3 months' time, that festival in the summer- but between now and then it can be easy to fall victim to a routine where you're directed entirely on autopilot mode.
It's an easy trap to fall into, and we can do it without even realising it- complain that you're bored when in reality there's an ever-growing pile of chores to do that you're conveniently shifting to the side and 'forgetting about': but not really forgetting, you know that essay is going to be due in eventually, but that's a problem for later you right? The current you can spend your time doing something more important, like...
Like what exactly?
I found myself falling susceptible to this, like many, and hated it. I wanted something to do, because I needed the enjoyment, but money and time are limiting factors and I already had so much on my plate. And so I was procrastinating- obviously- when I came across a YouTube video by StudyTuber (and now author) Unjaded Jade. I'll leave the link below so you can check it out yourself, but Jade talks about 'romanticising life', something which sounds about as snobby as possible, and I turned my nose up to at first, until I realised this was actually exactly what I needed. The key to this is finding small, seemingly insignificant things in life that you can appreciate- as Jade puts it at the start of the video, 'finding beauty in the mundane everyday'. Take time to actively consider these parts of life, and enjoy them, whether it be appreciating the squirrel that runs past on your way to work, or how good the music you're listening to right now actually is. How lucky you are to have the ability to walk, to listen, to see. Once these things have value to you, even if you just take 2 seconds out of your day to smile at them, the mundane routines we get caught up in become slightly less mundane. Maybe it won't completely change your life- and it doesn't have to- but it will make the dull periods in between the big moments in your life slightly more tolerable, and sometimes that's all you need.
Since watching that video and taking the idea of casual magic into my everyday life, things have been a lot easier to navigate, and I can't help but think how much this will impact my travel journey as well. The less time I spend stressing over what the next move is, and the more I treasure the present, the better an experience I can have right now, and smile on when I reflect.
Cheers for the read,
EV.
